Sometimes . . . when someone has experienced a tragedy, it’s best to sit with them in silence. Not always, but sometimes. Alistair Begg, senior pastor of Parkside Church in Cleveland, Ohio, calls that “Eloquent Silence.”
I remember one of our local chaplains telling us about a visit he made to a Navy family in the housing area whose baby had died. When he arrived, he sat with the couple on the front porch. Just sat with them. Later the couple told him that was the most helpful thing he could have done at the time. He acted according to Romans 12:15, “. . . mourn with those who mourn.”
Walk by Faith, Not by Sight
Excellent or Praiseworthy is posted on Monday and Thursday nights.
We live by faith, not by sight. — 2 Corinthians 5:7
Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. — Hebrews 11:1
What does “walking”, not by sight look like?
It requires two elements that are often over-looked and under-exercised.
- Walking – requires effort on our part to move in a new direction.
- Faith – exchanges the dependence on what is known, with what is to be known.
- Through walking and faith, relationships and trust become a reality.
- We are asked to exercise what we can no longer take for granted.
- We are asked to build upon what was otherwise unknown or not understood.
Shipmates, we have a journey ahead.
What is your faith in and how have you been walking?
Let us pray:
Lord, As we finish out this day and walk into the next,
May we be mindful of Your over watch throughout our group sail.
Help us to remember Your guidance among our steps and that this guidance gives us both relationship and rest.
As we look over the horizon and on into the future,
May we be mindful of Your leadership and the freedoms that give us life.
May we listen to Your voice and allow others to hear it as well.
May we walk in Your ways and may our faith be strengthened where we do not have sight. AMEN
Editor’s Note: The devotion above was shared by a Navy chaplain from a message to his sailors. I have included below a music video by Jeremy Camp, a favorite of many, which emphasizes this chaplain’s message:
Questions to Share:
1. Are there times in the past when you have not known what to do, but the Lord led you step by step?
2. How did those times build your faith?
