I think I’m like a lot of military professionals in that I pride myself in being able to make a good plan. After all, I’ve had over 20 years of training and practice in making plan after plan and having them tested, refined, tested again, criticized, tested again, refined and the final test of all, executed. We in the military should be good at making plans, and not just one plan either. We have Plan A, Plan B and Plan C, each of which have branches (contingency plans) and sequels (follow on plans) – all designed to ensure that when we set out to achieve our mission, our execution is robust and effective. The success of our plans in achieving a mission is where the rubber hits the road in the military. It can accelerate or decelerate our careers. It can lead to honor or to shame. Plans are pretty important, and I haven’t restricted my planning only to what I do in the military.
Walk by Faith, Not by Sight
Excellent or Praiseworthy is posted on Monday and Thursday nights.
We live by faith, not by sight. — 2 Corinthians 5:7
Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. — Hebrews 11:1
What does “walking”, not by sight look like?
It requires two elements that are often over-looked and under-exercised.
- Walking – requires effort on our part to move in a new direction.
- Faith – exchanges the dependence on what is known, with what is to be known.
- Through walking and faith, relationships and trust become a reality.
- We are asked to exercise what we can no longer take for granted.
- We are asked to build upon what was otherwise unknown or not understood.
Shipmates, we have a journey ahead.
What is your faith in and how have you been walking?
Let us pray:
Lord, As we finish out this day and walk into the next,
May we be mindful of Your over watch throughout our group sail.
Help us to remember Your guidance among our steps and that this guidance gives us both relationship and rest.
As we look over the horizon and on into the future,
May we be mindful of Your leadership and the freedoms that give us life.
May we listen to Your voice and allow others to hear it as well.
May we walk in Your ways and may our faith be strengthened where we do not have sight. AMEN
Editor’s Note: The devotion above was shared by a Navy chaplain from a message to his sailors. I have included below a music video by Jeremy Camp, a favorite of many, which emphasizes this chaplain’s message:
Questions to Share:
1. Are there times in the past when you have not known what to do, but the Lord led you step by step?
2. How did those times build your faith?
